On July 29, 2024, the occupation’s military police raided Sde Teman military camp, detaining soldiers accused of brutally sexually assaulting a male detainee from Gaza. The male detainee is reported to have severe signs of rape using sharp torture tools. Lawyers have documented numerous cases of torture and sexual violence against detainees from Gaza, revealing a grim pattern of abuse within the Sde Teman military camp. Despite these well-documented cases, 99% of investigations into IOF's torture and abuse against Palestinians fail to advance, resulting in no accountability or repercussions for the perpetrators. This persistent lack of justice highlights the systemic impunity within the IOF, allowing such egregious violations to continue unchecked.
Lawyers have documented numerous instances where the IOF conducted excessive strip searches on detainees from Gaza. During these searches, detainees were forced into humiliating positions and subjected to the use of metal detectors on their bodies, which were moved around their private areas while the soldiers mocked them and verbally abused them with constant cursing and forcing detainees to curse themselves.
Numerous human rights organizations, including Addameer, have been documenting the torture, ill-treatment, and human rights violations against detainees from Gaza since the beginning of the genocide in Gaza. Organizations have meticulously recorded instances of physical and psychological abuse, providing critical evidence of the systemic mistreatment and torture occurring within facilities like Sde Teman. Reports highlight the severity and scale of the violations, underscoring the urgent need for international intervention and accountability to address these ongoing human rights abuses.
Detainees from Gaza are kept in these camps in painful stress positions and subjected to degrading treatment, with a significant number still in Sde Teiman during this raid. The detainees are zip tied and blindfolded thus making them vulnerable to attacks and unable to defend themselves during the raid and if the situation were to escalate further than it already has. Detainees are subjected to prolonged periods of kneeling with their backs bent and heads down during transfers, while waiting for their turn with lawyers, and in the cages or cells where they are kept. Additionally, during headcounts, detainees must lay face down until the entire facility's headcount is completed. They are prohibited from making eye contact with soldiers and must request permission to speak.
Additionally, there have been several deaths among the detainees from Gaza – reported to be around 38 deaths – Palestinian human rights organizations have no way of confirming the exact numbers of deaths due to restricted access and lack of transparency from the Occupational authorities.
Israeli settlers who interfered with the occupation’s military police's efforts to detain the perpetrators must be legally punished and held accountable for their actions.
Addameer calls for immediate international intervention to ensure accountability and the humane treatment of all detainees. We urgently call for a clear and thorough international investigation by the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court into the systematic abuses and human rights violations committed against detainees from Gaza. This investigation should comprehensively address the documented cases of torture, sexual violence, and degrading treatment, ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. The failure of the Israeli justice system to provide accountability, highlighted by the recent findings of the International Court of Justice on the apartheid regime, underscores the necessity of international intervention to uphold justice and human rights.
